I totally forgot to show pics of this Ukulele that I built using John Mayes Cigar Box Uke DVD. It is a fantastic DVD that can really guide you in the process of building one of the cutest little instruments out there. It plays beautifully by the way, and is really fun little instrument to have laying around. Plays great in the car too Enjoy!

Milt,
I got this from a cigar store for $5. You can get 5 boxes on ebay for $10. Just make sure you get one around 7" wide x 9-10" long x 2.5-3" deep. This one was a little too shallow. A bigger box would have helped the sound.

Thanks Andy!

Strangely satisfying little beasts, aren't they? Looks like you did a great job!

Is that the original box bottom, or did you graft on a nice piece of wood?

A surprising number of the older boxes are made with really nice woods, such as meranti (not everyone will agree that's a nice wood), real mahogany or Spanish cedar. I watch for vintage boxes at collectible and Junque shops. Around here they're typically $8 to $12.

Dennis,
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, very satisfying, and they sound great. The back is completely removed and replaced with a nice piece of redwood that I had as a cutoff. It was thicknessed to 1/16" and braced per the DVD. Check Ebay for boxes, you will not be disappointed.

Seriously though, it looks great. I never noticed the headstock shape before. I likes.
